Chatham University, in recognition of academic excellence, awards scholarships to deserving incoming full-time students. On this page, explore the scholarships available and learn how to apply.

Available Chatham Scholarships

Below you'll find information about scholarships, including eligibility, amount, renewability, and more. All undergraduate scholarships require full-time enrollment, are renewable for up to four years (or 120 credits) of study at Chatham University, and have a minimum GPA requirement that must be met each year. Chatham aid is not available for summer enrollment.

Merit Scholarship

$22,000 to $32,000+ Annually
Based on academic excellence, students may qualify for a Chatham Merit Scholarship. The scholarship amount will be determined once the student is admitted to the University. You do not need to submit a separate application for this scholarship.


Presidential Scholarship

Full Tuition Annually, awarded to up to two incoming first-year students

The Presidential Scholarship is an annually renewable scholarship that covers tuition for each academic year, for a total of four years (or 120 credits) of study at Chatham University. FAFSA filing required. The student is required to live on campus. 3.5 cumulative GPA required for renewal.


Rachel Carson Scholarship

Full Tuition Annually, awarded to up to two incoming first-year students

The Rachel Carson Scholarship is an annually renewable scholarship that covers tuition for each academic year, for a total of four years (or 120 credits) of study at Chatham University. FAFSA filing required. The student is required to live on campus. 3.5 cumulative GPA required for renewal.


Heffer Family Scholarship for Women

$10,000 Annually, two awards offered annually

The Heffer Family Scholarship for Women is a $10,000 annually renewable scholarship awarded to female students who have a proven record of academic achievement, leadership capacity, as well as community and co-curricular involvement. Up to two (2) new scholarships are awarded each year. FAFSA filing required. The student is required to live on campus. 3.5 cumulative GPA required for renewal.


Karen Lake Scholarship

$10,000 Annually, two awards offered annually

The Karen Lake Scholarship is an annually renewable scholarship open to students who have a minimum GPA of 3.5. This scholarship aims to reduce financial barriers and provide opportunities for students who are first-generation college attendees or who demonstrate high financial need, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).


Integrated Degree Program (IDP) Scholarship

Up to $500 Annually

The Integrated Degree Program (IDP) Scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in an IDP-related major and maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.5.


Keystone Scholarship

Up to $1,500 Annually

The Keystone Scholarship is awarded to out-of-state domestic undergraduate students admitted to Chatham University who plan to enroll in the upcoming term.


PA Resident Scholarship

Up to $1,000 Annually

The PA Resident Scholarship is awarded to in-state domestic undergraduate students admitted to Chatham University who plan to enroll in the upcoming term.


Steel City Scholarship

Up to $500 Annually

The Steel City Scholarship is awarded to in-state domestic undergraduate students who are residents in one of 13 Western Pennsylvania counties (Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Crawford, Erie, Fayette, Greene, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango, Washington, Westmoreland) admitted to Chatham University who plan to enroll in the upcoming term. This award can be combined with the PA Resident Scholarship!


Pittsburgh Promise Scholarship

Up to $5,000 Annually

Must meet . FAFSA filing is required by May 1.


Chatham Partner Housing Scholarship

Up to $2,500 Annually

Must meet Pittsburgh Promise eligibility requirements. FAFSA filing is required by May 1.


Legacy Award

Up to $3,000 Annually

Awarded to children, grandchildren, and siblings of Chatham alumni. Only one Legacy scholarship is awarded per student. Alumni verification is required.


Minna Kaufmann Ruud Music Scholarship

Up to $3,500 Annually

For qualified vocalists who plan to major in music or incorporate music into an interdepartmental major while a student at Chatham. Participation in the Chatham Choir is required. To apply for this scholarship, please submit the completed application form. Once we receive your application, you will be contacted to audition. An audition is required. Renewable annually with an annual audition. Priority deadline: February 6.


Phi Theta Kappa Honors Scholarships

Up to $2,000 Annually

Awarded to community college transfer students with a minimum 3.0 cumulative college GPA. Documentation of PTK membership required.


Rachel Carson Healthy Planet Award

Up to $2,500 Annually

The Rachel Carson Healthy Planet Award will be presented to a deserving high school junior from each high school across the United States and internationally who embodies the spirit of Rachel Carson through their dedication to sustainability and community development. Eligible students for this award are current high school juniors in the U.S. and internationally and must be nominated by a teacher, school counselor, or advisor. Priority deadline: June 1.

Donor-Funded Scholarships

At Chatham University, the generosity of alumni and friends supports a diverse range of donor-funded undergraduate scholarships. These awards are automatically considered, and no separate application is required. The Office of Financial Aid makes all decisions regarding donor-funded scholarships.

The Anne Putnam Mallinson ’61 Scholarship 

The scholarship was established by William Mallinson in honor of his late wife, Anne Putnam Mallinson ’61. Anne graduated from Chatham with a BA in Music and was an active volunteer for a variety of different music and performing arts organizations. This scholarship has a first preference for a student from Warren County or Western PA who majors in Music or Performing Arts at Chatham. 


The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation Endowed Scholarship 

The Foundation was established through the estate of Charlotte W.  Newcombe, who greatly valued the importance of higher education. Student must be 25 and working toward their first undergraduate degree.


The Class of 1962 Scholarship Challenge 

The Class of 1962 created a generous scholarship challenge for the Chatham community, with the goal of inspiring alumni to create 15 new endowed scholarships. In academic year 2021-22, nine of the scholarships are available to be awarded. 


Elizabeth Waite Prine ‘61 Scholarship Fund 

Elizabeth Waite Prine ’61 established the scholarship to support students majoring in the environmental sciences at Chatham.


Harriet Lewis Franklin Endowed Scholarship 

The Harriet Lewis Franklin Endowed Scholarship was created by Dr. Harriet Lewis Franklin ’59 and inspired by her love for education and English. A former English professor, she created a scholarship to honor Chatham students who have a similar passion for English.


The Joan Finegold Memorial Scholarships in Nursing 

Dr. Milton Finegold established these scholarships in honor of his late wife, Joan Finegold. Joan was a nurse who had a passion for helping others. Her generous spirit and dedication to nursing continue through The Joan Finegold Memorial Scholarships in Nursing.


Lesley Hilfman Hume Scholarship

This $2,500 award is granted to a full-time Chatham undergraduate student in good standing. The award is intended to enrich the student's academic program by providing an opportunity for summer study abroad. 


The Marlene Suran Davis ’58 Endowed Scholarship 

The scholarship was established by the late Richard Davis in honor of his late wife, Marlene Suran Davis ’58. Marlene spent her career in teaching, and this scholarship commemorates Marlene’s love for education.


The Susan Bergman Gurrentz ’56 Endowed Scholarship  

Joan and Rodger Gurrentz and their family established the scholarship in honor of Susan Bergman Gurrentz ’56. Susan was an accomplished artist with a career spanning 50 years as a portrait artist, painting individuals, families, and dignitaries from around the world.  Chatham’s Art Gallery has also been renamed in her honor. The Susan Bergman Gurrentz ’56 Scholarship supports students who share Susan’s passion for the fine arts.


How to Qualify for a Scholarship

To qualify for a Chatham Scholarship, students must complete an admissions application, be accepted to the University, and, in some cases, participate in an interview or audition.

Please have your application portal login information ready to access the scholarship application.

Undergraduate scholarships require full-time enrollment and may be renewable for up to four years (or 120 credits) of study at Chatham University. Each scholarship may require a minimum GPA to be eligible for renewal. See below for full details.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required for consideration of need-based aid, as well as federal and state awards. Opens October 1. File the FAFSA at and be sure to add Chatham University's school code: 003244.
